I was just sitting with our social media team reviewing some traffic statistics for a client’s investor relations-focused blog. I was amazed to find that since launching it less than a year ago, their blog has gone from 0 to 2,300 average visitors per month. In a world where numbers are king, but measurement is frequently elusive, it’s hard to ignore the success of their blogging efforts.

Our client is not alone. In separate discussions I’ve had with leading investor relations officers around the country, there’s growing recognition that social media is an effective tool for communicating with investor audiences.

For instance, IROs often have information to share that does not warrant a full-blown press release, but still has value for investors. The ability to post this information on the company’s blog lets IROs address “the issue du jour,” saving hours of otherwise unproductive time on the phone answering the same question from a host of investors.

These early adopters are finding creative uses of social media to improve communications with their investors. Yet most IROs are still only slowly adopting some form of social media.

Social media has never claimed to offer the silver bullet that will magically increase the value of your organization by magnitudes. But in a world that is increasingly expecting unfettered access to an endless ocean of information, it just seems a bit ironic that most IROs are ignoring a tool that enables them to control their company’s narrative and join the many conversations that are already influencing their valuation.
